2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this trend, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the trend in gaming looks particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.

If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
