RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
