The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
