Ex- FBI Director James Comey Files Denial Plea to Charges of Lying US Legislators
Previous FBI head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.
His legal representative submitted the answer on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was indicted just days after the former president urged his top legal official to proceed against him.
Legal Proceedings
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the court they intended to present multiple petitions to throw out the case before a legal hearing, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to take over the case.
Mr Comey's case was first handled by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.
Judicial Environment
The former director appeared in positive mood as he came into the court on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.
Upon hearing to the judge read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he comprehended the charges.
"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.
Historical Information
The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into the former president's first term as president. At the period, he was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
While in office, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.
Present Charges
Government attorneys assert the former director lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by saying he had not permitted an individual at the agency to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also charge the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and impede" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
