Seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
