The Three Lions Search for World Cup Bases Amidst Worries of Losing Preferred Location to Netherlands.
The Football Association has sent scouts to the United States this week to look at potential facilities for the forthcoming global finals, amidst increasing apprehensions that their top-pick base could be allocated by the Dutch national team.
Tournament Draw Complexities Disrupt Arrangements
Manager Thomas Tuchel had previously approved an FA strategy for England to set up camp in Kansas after a pre-tournament training period in Fort Lauderdale. But, after the recent group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who play their group games in Kansas, will be awarded first refusal on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre operated by US Soccer.
The world governing body allocates training camps according to geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially pitting the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's central region.
Exploring Alternative Locations
Given England's group fixtures set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be investigating alternative locations on the US East Coast. The FA started its search for training bases at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott touring potential sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this early planning, there was always an acceptance that the final tournament draw could significantly alter their plans.
Later Round Logistics Plans
The Three Lions have the eighth most demanding group stage draw in terms of travel distance. Winning Group L would set England on track for a round of 32 game in Atlanta, then a potential round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Significant Departure: The FA may opt to choose to move between venues for the later rounds if England qualify, a significant shift from its usual practice of maintaining a fixed tournament base.
- FIFA Recommendation: FIFA is believed to be recommending such a flexible approach for the expansive 2026 tournament.
After the base camp is finalized, the FA will focus on organizing two warm-up matches in Florida at the beginning of June.
