Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
