Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
