Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
